celebrating the banana - from the mini mantra calendar

we get through a LOT of bananas in our house.
the lady at Lidl once asked me if I had monkeys at home.
sometimes I think she's not that far from the truth.

they get eaten;
with yoghurt for breakfast
with ice cream for pudding
in sandwiches mashed with honey
in after school milkshakes
in super healthy beetroot smoothies
in packed lunch boxes
and my personal favourite - in banana bread - find my recipe here

Ali wrote a celebrating banana's post about her breakfast eating experiences. you should read it.
and then tell me your favourite way to celebrate the banana.

  1. That banana bread looks scrummy. I'm all for a banana at breakfast - usually just chopped up in a bowl of cereal. My daughter taught me to freeze and then liquidize them to produce a sort of dairy free ice-cream but I think it's a bit cold for that at the moment! x

  2. I rarely eat bananas - not that I don't like them - it just never occurs to me - it sounds like I am missing out on some delicious treats though - I may have to rectify the situation.

  3. I usually eat bananas as a snack when I'm out and about and get hungry. Saves money as I don't buy snacks and it's healthier too.

  4. Bananas and custard, mmmmmh! We get through a lot of bananas too, I take two to work, sugar free flapjack is made weekly with banana for sweetness and we also make banana loaf with the overripe ones. My favourite banana story is the time we met an old lady who shared a busy cafe table with us and told us how the American GI's gave the local children bananas and she didn't know you had to peel it first. Aw.

  7. Sadly bananas don't like me anymore, I used eat them until they started causing migraines! One of my favourite fruit loaves was banana and walnut - yum. x

  8. Always making banana bread for my monkeys ( self included). But my favourite treat is banana on almond butter on just about anything I can spread almond butter on!

  10. I am with you on the love of bananas, they are the best. I eat them with ice cream and on their own in replacement of a doughnut if I am feeling especially healthy at work. But best of all is banana bread, oh it is so very very yummy and yours looks delicious. - Annie

  12. Banana pops! Dip half a banana in melted chocolate and sprinkles, poke in a lolly stick and freeze - like a virtuous choc ice - bliss!

  13. oooh, YUM! We love banana bread here, either with the choc chips or with a queeze of orange juice and its zest. Delish. I have a weakness for chopped banana on hot, buttery toasted soda bread. x

  14. I buy them occasionally to eat at work for lunch and then eat the ones that are back-endish with cold tinned custard. I might have a go at banana bread. My husband picked up a lemon loaf at the supermarket the other day and I said 'I can bake one of those, I've done it before' and he just laughed.. a lot. Maybe I have a point to prove.

  16. I've never made banana bread before and I'll certainly be giving your recipe a try later in the week. I still have to peel Amy's tangerines for her lunchbox and she's 15! xx

  17. I love bananas but I'm particular about the stage of ripeness when I enjoy them most. They have to be just barely ripe but not yet brown. I'll eat them anyway, but that's my favorite point.

  18. We eat quite a lot of bananas too but not as many as you all do!

  19. I do love bananas, but I just don't like them cooked - mashed in sandwiches, sliced on cereal or in custard or just as they are. And my family are split down the middle on them, 3 of us love them and the other 3 will not let one pass their lips.

  20. I once orders 55 bananas by mistake from Tesco. I had no children at the time and only meant to order 5. I am not a banana sandwich fan although I suspect the honey might change all that! I do like them with my porridge though :)

  21. Oh, the bananas..I do love them, but don't for some reason buy them very often. I need to rectify that.
I grew up in Hawaii...way up in the Manoa Valley. It was country then, but I was clueless to know that.
Any Hoo, our house was between two streams and bordered at the bottom by a huge banana plantation. It was run by a lovely old Japanese couple who would bring us tons of bananas when my older brother came home from school. My beloved mother must have made pounds and pounds of banana bread. This looks so delish!
    Wishing you well, Ellen.
