last week at middle school.

Picture the scene.

a conversation with E.

"I want to make a present for Mrs F. It needs to be Star Wars themed. Mrs F likes Star Wars and she told us on transfer day last year that any gifts we ever got her have to be Star Wars"

this from the boy that can't remember what day of the week it is,
but he can remember what someone said about Star Wars over a year ago.........

"oh and it has to have Galaxy chocolate with it too."

presumably this is due to Star Wars taking place in "a Galaxy Far Far Away",
but I decide not to go there..........

after Much discussion it is decided we will sew a document wallet envelope pockety thing, that can hold useful papers and chocolate.

there is then a lot of discussion about why we can't sew Yoda (or Darth Vader, or embroider a Death Star, or make flashing light sabres) on the cover, long sighs from E, and then from me, and a compromise of stars and lettering. which used up the last of my favourite fusible bonding magic stuff so I hope Mrs F appreciates that......

the measuring got a bit haphazard and the seams are a bit wonky and bulky (but he sewed it all himself and only nearly sewed my finger once) so the large pocket fits sheets of A4 paper "just" but the small pocket will still be fine for chocolate.
When I've bought it.
Which is the next thing on my to do list after drink tea, drink more tea and continue to wonder how on earth the youngest child can be leaving middle school and going to high school....

last night they had a leaver's party.
dress code smart casual.

"do I HAVE to wear a shirt? I don't like shirts."

eventually we find a shirt he likes.
no one else in the entire world would like a shirt like this surely.
or think it the right thing to wear to a "it's Not a prom!!!!!"

and then of course he wants to wear a bow tie with it.

what could be harder than fitting a bow tie on a taller than I am wriggling 13 year old?
surely nothing.

oh except trying to get a decent photograph of him wearing it.

I gave up.
he kept pulling silly faces so I just chopped off his head.

  6. I'm laughing out loud here, because my boy also has an amazingly selective memory and certainly never knows (or cares) what day of the week it is. I was hoping that this may change (he's almost 7), but since your boy is 13 my hopes have just been shot :-)

  7. Oh this is so funny!! The star wars and chocolate bit and the chopping the head off in the photo because of the faces bit, and the bow tie with the outrageous shirt too! It is a great party shirt though isn't it. I hope that the teacher likes the present, it is definitely very useful and great that your son made it! xx

  8. I'm laughing. Oh you're a good mum, a very good mum. And she's a lucky teacher, I just know she'll appreciate the last of your favourite fusible bonding magic stuff. How lovely to have a boy who knows exactly what he likes. My littlest boy has his own style, which always makes us laugh, but he is so certain about it I generally just go along with it. I hope you all have a good weekend. CJ xx

  9. This is funny! The shirt, the bow tie (the perfect touch!) and the very detailed gift idea. It's lovely that he did the sewing himself. My two are younger but every year I marvel at how fast they grow and change. It's bittersweet, and I hope the transition from primary to high school is a smooth one for you both. x

  13. Aww Tess you are a lovely mum to help him make such a great present, she'll treasure that so much more than the 29 scented candles that she'll get from the rest of the class. Love E's style, smart casual with a lovely large dollop of creative individuality, hope he had a great time x

  15. OHMYGOSH -- I LOVE that shirt! Can I have it when he doesn't want it anymore? It reminds me so much of a jumper (hmmm, I think you guys call them a pinafore maybe -- or not -- it's not an apron but rather a dress that has no sleeves that you wear over a shirt?) that I had when I was a little girl -- oh how I loved my little jumper. It's PERFECT with that bow tie. Your boy is obviously a keeper and you're a wonderful Mum. I love that you let him sew that Star Wars keeper too -- the perfect gift!

  19. I love the shirt (I am genuinely wondering if I should look up where I can buy one, I apparently have the same taste in clothes as a 13 year old boy, that is ok with me) and the gift is pretty awesome too! - Annie

  20. That's so sweet that he made a handmade gift. LOVE his shirt and bow tie combo! Such a milestone having your last one head off to High School, I'm still a while away from that but I do know once they start school the years just whizz by... x

  21. That has to be the best 'not a Prom' combo ever! And such a sweet gift. I rather like the sound of Mrs F on the basis of her present choices.

I'm down to only the youngest left at home ... the years just fly!

  23. Despite him nearly sewing one of your fingers, your boy has made an outstanding job of this Star Wars themed Document Wallet Envelope Pockety type thing. I'm sure Mrs F was thrilled with his gift.
