a random ten

a random ten, inspired by Annie

1. I feel as if we are living in a cloud. It is Very wet, very grey and very very foggy which makes it hard to see past the end of the car, which makes driving difficult....

2. So far I have gone out three times in the car already, and I have at least two more trips to make. Sometimes I don't go out in the car for days and days on end. Those are the days I like best......

3. It is also very muddy. And someone with little white but not clean paws is in disgrace. I sent the photo to J who suggested we might be having kitten curry for dinner. Luckily for the disgraced cat in question I had already planned tonight's dinner.....

4. I made cookies. It is Leanne's fault. I read about them about an hour ago, and now there are two trays of cookies in the kitchen. I used Doves Farm gluten free flour and gluten free certified oats, and they are thin and crispy and probably won't last very long.

5. I'm taking E back to the opticians later. This will be the 4th lesson in "how to fit contact lenses."
Oh it looks so easy and really really it isn't. He wants some for sport lessons occasionally and for youth theatre (curse you English teacher who doesn't like to see children in glasses in his productions..........) but he really can't get the hang of it.
The impossibly long and curly eyelashes aren't helping. They keep getting in the way....
If only I had those, and he had my almost non existent short and straight eyelashes....

6. I messed up ordering tickets for the world record attempt of most witches.
Now I only have to make two costumes.......  Every mistake has a silver lining........

7. We're planning on going to the Woodhorn Museum tomorrow to see the Weeping Window installation of poppies from the WW1 Centenary.  All the pictures I have seen are incredibly dramatic.

8. I bought some tortilla chips from the supermarkets earlier. I've been buying the same ones for months, and they used to be gluten free but now I see the label says "not suitable for wheat allergy sufferers due to manufacturing methods" The ingredients are maize and oil and salt for goodness sake. Presumably they're made on a line that also produces wheat products. I looked up on their website and their more expensive tortilla chips manage to be gluten free - they also cost twice as much and have more salt on them.......... grrrrrrr. makes me so cross. It's bad enough that there's gluten in so many things anyway, and then when manufacturers change the production so you have to check every time you buy something...... oh and pay more. ok rant over.

9. J is going to London next month for a meeting. I have convinced him that he has to go to Selfridges foodhall and buy gluten free donuts. When you spend too much time on instagram you learn that such things exist and where they can be obtained from.

10. The Coffee lady has got me addicted to Chai tea. Oh the irony..........

  1. I failed at contact lenses too. I managed to get them in during the second session but had such a panic at the thought of taking them out that I abandoned the project. MissM is rather ashamed of me but luckily I don't need them for sport.

  2. Random indeed - but such insight to life :) I wear glasses for computer work and would never consider contact lenses - not brave enough! I love chai tea too so off to investigate the link x

    1. I think I might live a very random life! It's very nice tea, I've tried the vanilla and the marsala but haven't found any of the cardamon one.

  3. I edited a gluten-free food book a couple of years ago, did a lot of research and understand how annoying it must be checking the small print on every ingredients list. But you can't be making everything from scratch all the time. IG is brilliant – g-free donuts in Selfridges! Would it be too uncool for your son to wear one of those headbands to hold his glasses on in sport? And I'd be tempted to have a strong word with that English teacher...

    1. I am really looking forward to my donuts! I don't think it's the glasses falling off he's worried about, more them breaking, I think it would be easier to get some sports glasses, but then that wouldn't appease the English teacher.........

  4. Oh no! Who is going to miss out on the Witches record? Of course, we will need to see those two costumes!

  5. I remember how hard it was when I first started wearing contact lenses. I used to leave them until right at the end of the day to put in for an hour or two because I didn't like doing it. But once I got into the habit of it is was fine. Just have to keep at it for a bit. I hope he gets on with them well before too much longer. I liked the sound of those cookies as well, and now I've seen yours they look delicious. Those little paws are so sweet, they really are. All curled round and cosy. The life of a cat is about as good as it gets I think. CJ xx

  6. It relieves me to know that you are not having kitten curry for dinner. Oh, this made me laugh as it sounds like my house. I do love his sense of humor. I hope that the contacts work out. I have worn glasses for ages..since my 40's and I think that I could handle contacts just fine, I just like to think that my "specs" help to hide the now enlarging Gladstone Bags under my eyes. I do wonder what I could do about the emerging turkey wattle that is happily nesting on my neck. Oh, the glories of being old, but it does beat the alternatives. I love Chai tea as well. Those cookies look just yummy.

  7. L took quite a while to get used to her contact lenses too - tell E to keep persevering but SHAME on that youth theatre teacher! I've just copied down that cookie recipe from Leanne's blog too - I'll be baking them later. I'm a big chai tea fan as well - I think it will go nicely with one of the cookies! xx

  10. I don't think I could ever bring myself to put a contact lense in my eye, my husband does it every day.......

The Woodhorn Musuem looks amazing might have to visit that if we are ever over your way.

Enjoy your costume making, who gets to go?

    1. I wear contacts occasionally, so I now How to do it. Teaching someone else is a whole different thing....

  11. Kitten curry sounds interesting. I have just threatened my dog that he will be turned into slippers if he carries on messing with my blankets.... I noticed that there is gluten where you least expect it. Could it be that the tortilla chips have been produced in the same way but the regulations for labelling have changed? I have made doughnuts before, it is quite easy and you could use gluten free flour. Shall I dig my recipe out and email it to you? It is fun, too, because you can fill them with anything you like, savoury if you fancy. Just thinking of a doughnut makes me hungry. xx

  12. It must be a real faff having any intolerance. I realise I am lucky to be able to shovel anything in without consequence. I love Chai tea. Tassimo do a Chai capsule which I was addicted to but they disappeared from the supermarket and now you can only buy them over the internet and they are expensive. I think I shall join in with this random, it suits my thinking.....
And I'm glad that you didn't do kitten curry...very glad.

  13. Chai is something I've always fancied trying - must jot that down. And yes, I agree completely on the gluten free thing. Ridiculously expensive and I hate the way manufacturers cover themselves by laballing their products as being potentially tainted, It's like buying 'dry clean only' clothes - probably fine but you daren't take the risk.
And that teacher not liking glasses? For goodness sake!
It's dark and grey and foggy here too. Oh, and raining steadily. I hope it doesn't take all the beautiful leaves off the trees...

  15. I'm not a tea drinker but even I like chai, especially chai latte (I make my own).

I've had cause to threaten dog spat bog her before now!

    Loved the list Tess.

  17. Hey Tess,
I resent using the car. I much prefer to walk. I hope you enjoyed the biscuits. I know I did ;)) I couldn't be doing with contact lenses, but am appalled that the drama teacher can't be doing with glasses. As for spying doughnuts on instagram......I simply love instagram.

  19. Oh goody!! I read Leannes recipe and thought yet something else I can't have and now you have made a gluten free version yippee :) I ate some tortilla chips the other day, had them lots of times before so didn't think twice about it........had me running to the loo for the rest of the day. Why do they have to change things!!!!

    1. wretched manufacturers.......
the gluten free cookies were pretty good! of course Leanne didn't post a picture so who knows if they look the same but........

  20. I also saw those cookies on Leanne's blog and liked the sound of them very much. I think I should make them. I hope E got the hang of contact lenses. I remember struggling to get to grips with them as a teen but vanity made me stubborn and persistent. x

  21. I'm not squeamish about much at all, but contact lenses and eyes give me the creeps so I have lots of sympathy for your son. Those cookies look good, I like recipes that are quick so when you just fancy them you don't have to wait hours before you get to eat it. And I'm sure you've been getting lots more cloud and rain this past month (can't believe I'm so far behind) but hope you didn't get hit too badly by the terrible stuff this weekend.
