Hollow Crown

Last week Alnwick was host to a film crew, producing series 2 of  Hollow Crown, a BBC adaptation of Shakespeare's history plays.

They picked the coldest week of the winter so far, and possibly the muddiest.

The castle grounds became a battle ground,

with knights and horses, and smoke machines to add to the drama

a village appeared on the pastures complete with a pile of "bodies"

None of the major actors were seen in the town, unlike during the filming of Downton Abbey in the summer,
much to the disappointment of everyone who hoped to catch a glimpse of Benedict Cumberbatch......

I think the castle may end up being the star of the show though.  I can't tell you how many photos I took of the way the light was  appearing behind the ramparts and then glistening on the water

  6. I do love that place. We must take Twiglet especially now he's seen some of the Harry Potter films. I would love to bump into Benedict Cumberbatch while out shopping, I'd make him read to me, I love his voice ;) right up there with Alan Rickman, for me.

  8. I love Alnwick castle. As a child I was always very taken with the figures on the very tops of the ramparts, thrilling and scary in equal parts.
Any glimpse of any part of Benedict Cumberbatch would be very welcome...........

  9. The castle is stunning, they certainly picked the perfect day. You didn't get in as an extra then? You could have been a wench or something. CJ xx

  10. You live in the most magical place! How fun that you get so many film crews there. I can't wait for the DA show where they visit the castle -- we haven't seen it yet!

  11. It is interesting to watch filming and see what they get up to isn't it. I am glad that we haven't had to have a pile of bodies at work ever - although we did have some zombies last year! The castle looks amazing the way that you have captured it in the cold and the mist swirling around and so on! xx

  12. How exciting! I love your photos the light is indeed beautiful. They didn't need any extras then, not that it is that exciting I did it a couple of times when I was a student it was good money but a lot of standing around........

  13. I really enjoyed seeing this place. I majored in English in college and Shakespeare's work was one of my areas of concentration. I wonder if we'll get this show over here too. Who is Benedict Cumberbatch playing?

  17. Such a picturesque castle. I envy you for having that in your back yard. We recently saw Benedict Cumberbatch in The Imitation Game. He was wonderful.

  18. I last visited Alnwick castle about 30 years ago on the way home from a camping holiday in Scotland. It's still as lovely as I remember. I agree with the Lorrie's comment about 'The Imitation Game' - absolutely brilliant. I'll have to keep an eye open for the series. x

  19. I am still devastated that I didn't realize they were filming Sherlock almost spitting distance from my home last year! There wasn't even a whisper on facebook about it - so well done to this tv crew!
