scrap quilting part 2

scrap quilting part 1 was a log cabin project, scrap quilting part 2 is all about hexagons.

one very perfect sized ornament shelf turned hexagon display box, lots of 2 1/2 inch fabric squares. many paper hexagons,

basted on the back, not going through the paper, just catching the corners,

slowly and satisfyingly the boxes are filling up.

Pretty soon I'm going to have to make a decision what to do with them all.

Random scattering of colours?

Stripes?

or perhaps more traditionally more hexagons?

what do you think? what's your favourite paper hexagon design?

  1. I am immediately drawn to the stripes, I do like it random but not too much. Your box full of hexagons is very arty. Love it. x

  2. Great idea to use the display box for your patchwork. I'm new to patchwork but am a big fan of hexies. Personally, I like them random but then I'm not an organized type of gal, so maybe that's why it appeals. Have fun with them - I can't wait to see which way you decide to go. xx

  3. Oooh, all those little hexies look so pretty! My favorite hexagon quilts are Grandmother's Flower Gardens -- I guess I'm just too traditional LOL!

  4. Gosh, they're beautiful. I have always wanted to try paper-piecing. Maybe this winter I'll finally get around to it. I love how yours are coming along.

  5. Wow, you're doing well with these. I made mine random, just beacause I was too impatient to get started on joining them together and didn't have time or space to figure out a pattern. I haven't really got very far, will need to dig it out now and have another bash before school starts back next week and time runs out again!

    1. I think being impatient is an excellent reason to be random x

  7. Ooh what a lot of work and such a wonderful dilemma - have you decided yet? I wondered about rainbow shades diagonally across?? Can't wait to see what you end up doing :)

  8. Oh, my goodness..such loveliness. I would choose random, but that is just me. I also think that if you get sidetracked and it is for a long time a work in progress, I would just hang the ornament shelf up on the wall..filled with all of that goodness and joy.
    Wow! Love it all.

  9. The stripes are lovely, but it might be easier to use all of them up if you go with something random. I shall look forward to seeing what you decide upon. CJ xx

  10. I don't have a favourite design but I love the box and the way you have them organised. I would probably go for stripes or similar rounds because I find I spend far too long on getting random properly random. It looks like a lot of work ahead (although you've already done a lot).

  11. Oh so lovely! What about using random, but with a general trend from dark shades at the bottom working up to light shades at the top? Can't wit to see what you do with it! X

  12. What a wonderful collection of hexies! I love the box filling up with them! I like all hexie patchwork, random, striped or made into flowers for a grandmother's flower garden.......each looks nice in its own way :)

  13. You look like you have a really good number there already, and what a lovely way to display/keep them. I'm not sure I have a favourite way with hexies, I love them all! I think it would have to depend on the fabrics - colours/values/designs - that you're using, and where you want it to live when it's finished - would it look better there more traditional or a bit funkier? I've just started a hexie project (going to be random for the above 2 reasons!), but it's only a cushion so I'm feeling full of admiration for your staying power (but maybe slightly smug that mine's going to be finished pretty soon!). Do you follow 'Crafty Pod' at all? She's just written a book on EPP, and is all about ideas on using EPP in smaller projects, there's a blog hop starting on EPP in borders - just in case you fancy getting sidetracked!

  14. They look so beautiful just in your little hexie box. They'll be stunning when put together. I would probably struggle for hours to get the perfect pattern .... But that's just me. Can't wait to see what you do next. X

  16. Oh how lovely, all those squares filled with those hexagons. I dream of making a hexie quilt but I don't know what kind of pattern I'd choose. I think maybe just randomly scattered all over would be pretty. x

  17. They look beautiful in the box :). I prefer the stripes to the random, I always find that however random I try to be they always ends up being patches of pattern!
